What are Greenhouse gases?
The Greenhouses gases are pollutants released into the air when gasoline, natural gas, oil and electricity are used to run cars, factories, offices and homes.  These gases have a global impact and are the cause of global warming and climate change.

How are GHGs damaging our environment?
Greenhouse gases intensify the atmosphere’s natural ability to trap the sun’s heat, causing Global warming.  Today's atmosphere contains 32 per cent more carbon dioxide than it did at the start of the industrial era. Levels of carbon dioxide are the highest they have been in nearly half a million years.   The impact of global warming seriously challenges the survival of humans and other species over the next several generations.  Global warming negatively impacts everyone on our planet by compromising biodiversity, food systems, economies, human and animal life, and changing our living habits.

Is Global Warming just a myth/media hype?
The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center reports that this year Arctic sea ice shrank to the smallest area ever recorded in the 30-year history of satellite monitoring. A study from the journal Geophysical Research Letters reports that Greenland is shrinking by some four centimeters a year due to melting ice - a four-fold increase in just four years. Another article in the same journal reports that new computer models indicate a 90 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 will be required if we are to have any hope of preventing dangerous climate change.

Is Global Warming really caused by Greenhouse gases, or is it just a natural cycle?
A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported that, in the first six years of this new century, carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas) emissions rose more than twice as fast as they did during the 1990s. And, the authors report, the earth's natural carbon "sinks" such as forests and oceans that store carbon and buffer us against climate change don't appear to be working as efficiently as they did 50 years ago. In other words, Mother Nature's ability to soak up our greenhouse pollution is weakening - and that threatens to speed up global warming even more.

Are Canadians really responsible for global warming?
Canada produces about 700 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year.  That’s 24 tonnes PER PERSON.  Canadians are the second worst polluters in the world, next to Americans.

What about industry? Don’t they cause most of the pollution?
Our homes account for 5.7% of our per capita emissions.  That means that almost 6% of Canada’s total emissions come from the heating and lighting of our homes.   LivClean offers you the chance to change what you are in control of changing. Your actions may seem small, but they make waves that ripple far and affect others.

What about countries like China, and third world countries? Aren’t they the worst offenders?
Ironically, citizens of developing countries—where climate change will take its greatest toll—produce only a fraction of the greenhouse gases of Canadians. Canadians are the second worst offenders in the world, next to the US.  Canada produces about 700 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year.  That’s 24 tonnes PER PERSON.  This is roughly 50 times the consumption rate of Bangladesh, a country that stands to be largely eliminated by climate change-induced sea level rise.  Canadians use more energy than all of the 760 million inhabitants of Africa put together.  Canada makes up less than one half of one percent of the world's population, but is the world's eighth largest producer of total carbon dioxide.

What else causes global warming?
The main causes of Global warming are the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas to generate electricity and heat our homes. The fuel used in transportation from cars, trucks, ships and airplanes. Industrial practices—like the Alberta tar sands, the loss of the world’s forest at an ever-increasing rate, Modern-day agriculture, through both deforestation and emitting massive amounts of greenhouse gases.

Can we really stop global warming?
Global Warming can be slowed, and maybe eventually stopped, if we all reduce our energy use and choose environmentally friendly energy sources. But this will take time. There are ways to immediately remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Special environmental projects that reduce green house gases are popping up around the world. Investment is needed to create more of these projects and to expand the ones already underway.

How does Carbon offsetting work?
If you add polluting emissions to the atmosphere, you can effectively subtract them by purchasing 'carbon offsets'.  It's based on the principle that, since climate change is a global problem, an emission reduction made elsewhere has the same positive effect as one made locally.

What is a ‘Carbon Offset’?
Offsets are the benefits created by environmental projects in all parts of the world that reduce carbon emissions from the air we all share. They work in different ways but they can avoid, reduce, and eliminate Green house gases. When you join the LivClean program, we invest in these carbon reducing environmental projects on your behalf. You may not be removing the exact carbon that you produce but, on a global scale, you will be doing your part.  It's based on the principle that, since climate change is a global problem, an emission reduction made elsewhere has the same positive effect as one made locally.

What does it mean to become “Carbon Neutral”?
By becoming carbon neutral you have basically neutralized all the greenhouse gases created by your home, business and lifestyle.  You can calculate how many tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) you produce by using the LivClean Carbon Calculator and calculating your carbon footprint.

What is a Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is the calculation of the amount of greenhouse gases produced from the burning of fossil fuels, the indirect emissions from products/services and of human activities.  To calculate a carbon footprint, carbon coefficients are used to formulate and derive your footprint. The easier way of calculating a carbon footprint is by using the LivClean Carbon Calculator.  The unit of measurement most commonly used to asses carbon footprints are Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide emitted, also known as tCO2-e.  Once you know your carbon footprint in tCO2-e, you can offset that amount with carbon offsets provided by LivClean projects.   Some LivClean carbon offset projects include:
Landfill Gas Conversion, Nicaragua Brick Kiln Fuel Conversion, Sustainable Treem Planting.

What is a Carbon Calculator?

A carbon calculator in most cases is a computational user-friendly method of measuring a carbon footprint (see above).  You can easily determine the amount of carbon emissions produced by using the LivClean Carbon Calculator.

How do I know that my investment is really making a difference?
The effectiveness of the selected projects is measured by impartial environmental agencies so it is possible to calculate how much pollution is being prevented or removed.  Our LivClean Carbon Offset certificates are backed by emissions reductions from reputable, well-managed projects.  FOR OUR VERIFICATION STANDARDS CLICK HERE’ .

How can you assure me that my investment is really going to reduce the amount of Carbon you claim?

The effectiveness of the selected projects are measured and verified by independent third parties. With the Kyoto Protocol, there has been serious development of accurate and consistent methods of auditing carbon dioxide reductions, so it is possible to calculate how much pollution is being prevented or removed. Our LivClean Carbon Offset certificates are backed by emissions reductions from reputable, well-managed projects. All the results are measurable and every transaction is transparent. Our retirement of the offset you buy is verified by respectful independent agencies conducting annual audits. FOR OUR VERIFICATION STANDARDS CLICK HERE’ .

What projects will my investment go to?
Carbon offset projects can include wind farms, solar installations, or energy efficiency projects. We currently support a portfolio of emission-reducing projects. Click here to see our current portfolio. Many of our projects have the added benefit of improving living conditions in developing countries. And Carbon offsetting is based on the principle that, since climate change is a global problem, an emission reduction made elsewhere has the same positive effect as one made locally. FOR OUR VERIFICATION STANDARDS CLICK HERE’ .

How do projects in other parts of the world help us here is Canada???
Unlike smog or acid rain, global warming is not limited to any specific region. Carbon dioxide reductions in one part of the world are equivalent to carbon dioxide reductions in any part of the world, so you can be confident that your LivClean purchase is having a local benefit.

Is LivClean a private, public or non-profit organization?
LivClean is a private social enterprise and our mission is to provide value and quality to our members while ensuring costs are minimized. Just like any other organization (private, public or non-profit) LivClean aims to achieve a revenue stream that allows us to be a self sustaining organization. By doing so, we are able to use independent auditors and third party verifiers annually to ensure we adhere to the quality metrics that we say we support such as no double counting, efficiency, additionality and accuracy. By striving for a 10% profit margin, we are able to fund projects that reduce CO2 emissions; identify, select and certify new projects; pay for CO2 reduction verifications and certificates; website maintenance and utilize commercial activities needed to identify new customers and promote carbon offsetting to maximize the message of helping the environment as a whole.

Does LivClean provide independent audit reports?
LivClean provides annual Audited Reports prepared by an independent third party accounting firm, confirming our offset purchases are sufficient to cover our offset sales.  Te reports are posted on our website here (hyperlink to http://www.livclean.ca/faq_reducingCarbon.php)

Is LivClean able to obtain CDM or GS certified projects?
Depending on the carbon offset mix you are looking for, we are able purchase Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or Gold Standards (GS) projects on your behalf.  Although we list some of our offset project mix, we will work towards creating a custom carbon offset portfolio that meets your needs and interest.  Currently, we are in the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) process which also gives an extra stamp of approval like the CDM or GS.

Do some of the carbon offsets come from reduced electricity grid demand?
We are currently planning the process to have this in approximately 6 months. You can visit our current carbon offset projects in our About Offsets section of our website.  We’ll be sure to let you know once these carbon offsets are available.

What about energy conservation, and reducing my actual emissions?
It’s still very important to reduce your actual emissions by taking steps like reducing your fossil fuel usage, using energy efficient appliances, furnaces, using CFL light bulbs, using public transportation, walking, cycling to work.  However, you will still have at least some emissions that you can not eliminate.  That’s where offsetting comes in.

Do I need to commit to a fixed price power or natural gas contract?
No, your LivClean plan is completely independent from your energy provider.  You can continue to get your energy from whomever you currently have a contract with, or just continue with your local utility.  And, you can choose to change your energy supplier without affecting your LivClean plan.

Is there a time commitment required?
No, you can cancel or change your LivClean plan at any time, with just 30 days notice.  You do not need to commit for any period of time.

Do I need to contact my utility/power company?
No, you do not need to contact your utility company.  Your LivClean plan is independent of your utility or any energy supplier.

Will my utility bill change?
No, your utility bill is unaffected by your LivClean plan.

What if I already have a power or natural gas contract with someone else?
No, your LivClean plan is completely independent from your energy provider.  You can continue to get your energy from whomever you currently have a contract with, or just continue with your local utility.  And, you can choose to change your energy supplier without affecting your LivClean plan.

How does this compare to ‘green’ power plans, like Bullfrog?
Green power is another great way to reduce carbon emissions.  However, it will almost double your current electricity bill, and the net impact on the environment will be exactly the same as offsetting.  Green power costs about 9 cents per KWH, verses your current rate of 5 cents.  And, if you heat your house with natural gas, 60% of your home’s emissions are coming from natural gas. Offsetting doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look into green power options as well.  Offsetting can work together with green/renewable power to further reduce your carbon footprint.

How come it’s so much cheaper than Renewable energy credits or green power?
LivClean uses the purchasing power of all its customers together, which gives the company substantial financial leverage. Then we use this to tip the balance to make clean energy and carbon reduction projects financially feasible.  In this way we are able to substantially reduce carbon dioxide emissions with minimal investment.

LivClean provides the additional money needed to help projects that reduce, eliminate or  replace carbon emissions possible by providing the last bit of funding needed to make the project financially viable verses other conventional practices.

For example, let's say that a local businessperson is considering building a wind energy plant. Because this plant replaces energy being generated from coal, it will result in a lot less carbon dioxide being put into the atmosphere. Currently, wind power isn't quite as cost-effective as power from coal. (Although with the cost of coal increasing, that could change.)

LivClean uses the investments of all our customers together to make these projects happen.

Is Carbon Offsetting a ‘permit to pollute?
No.  LivClean is just the first step in taking responsibility for the impact your living has on the environment.  We all need to continue to pursue other ways to reduce our impact for future generations.  Carbon Offsetting will only cover what you can’t reduce yourself.

How do you/I know how much Carbon my house is emitting?
Natural Resources Canada has determined that the average Canadian house emits 7 tonnes of carbon a year.  They define an average house as a single detached home of approximately 1,600 square feet, using both electricity and natural gas.

What if my house is bigger than the average?
Natural Resources Canada has determined that the average Canadian house emits 7 tonnes of carbon a year.  They define an average house as a single detached home of approximately 1,600 square feet, using both electricity and natural gas.  However, your offset does not need to EXACTLY match your emission.  And, in fact, many people choose to offset MORE than your house actually emits, as there are lots of other activities that cause GHG emissions.  For example, the average car emits 5 tonnes a year.

Does my car contribute to GHGs? How much?
Transport Canada has determined that a mid-sized Canadian car emits about 5 tonnes of carbon a year.  You can offset BOTH your home and your car with our DELUXE plan.

Shouldn’t we be driving Hybrids?
Hybrid vehicles aren't affordable or convenient options for everyone. And even hybrids put substantial amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere - on average about 3 tonnes per year. LivClean lets you offset 100% of your car's emissions today.

Do I still need to take my car in for emissions testing?
Yes! LivClean does not actually reduce the emissions that come directly from your car.  Instead, it reduces the same ‘amount’ of carbon dioxide your car emits in a year, from elsewhere in the world.  So you will still be emitting carbons.

Can I get a LivCLean plan for my business?
Yes! We have LivClean plans for businesses too.  You can call 1-800-755-9553 to speak to a LivClean business specialist.

Can I give a LivClean plan as a gift?
Absolutely. We will send the welcome package as a gift to your friend or family member.  We just need their address.

What is a mid-size car?
A mid-sized car is defined as a car with an average fuel efficiency of approximately 10km per liter and is driven 25,000 km per year.  The emission rate is provided by Transport Canada.

What other things emit GHGs?
The GHG Protocol calculates that every mid-haul flight of 1,000 kilometers emits 0.2 tonnes of carbon.  You can offset your air travel too with our FAMILY plan, which covers 4 return air travel trips.

What is one family vacation for 4?
This covers the emissions from air travel of 4 passengers on a return medium haul fight of 1000km each way within North America.  Emission rate is provided by the GHG Protocol.

What if I change my mind?
Your purchase is covered by our 10 day no-hassle refund policy: if for any reason you're unhappy with your purchase, contact us within 10 days of purchase and we will gladly issue you a full refund.

What is an annual plan?
When you choose an annual offset plan, an annual charge is taken off your credit card and your annual carbon offset requirements are obtained and retired on your behalf at that time.  You can update your plan to increase or decrease your tonnage offsets at anytime. You will be sent a copy of our terms and conditions with your welcome package.

What is a monthly plan?
When you choose a monthly offset plan, a monthly charge is taken off your credit card, and one twelfth of your annual carbon offset is retired every month.   You don’t have to worry about remembering to re-order each year, as your monthly plan will continue until you cancel it (minimum of 30 days notice required).  You can update your plan to increase or decrease your tonnage offsets at anytime.  You will be sent a copy of our terms and conditions with your welcome package.

Can I deduct my LivClean plan from my taxes?
No. But fortunately the cost of a LivClean plan is so small that any tax benefit would be almost nonexistent. How much would your tax bill be reduced by claiming a $99 charitable donation?

Will I get a monthly bill/statement?
No, you will not get a monthly statement from us.  The monthly or annual amount will be charged to your credit card and you will see it on your monthly statement.  That way we don’t need to go through the expense or waste of sending you a monthly statement.

Will the price of my plan ever change?
The price may change in the future, but you will be advised by e-mail 60 days prior to any price changes, and given the option to discontinue your plan if you are not happy with the change.

What if I do not have an e-mail, or I do not want to provide one?
Use the e-mail: noemail@planetenergy.ca

A paper copy of the receipt will be mailed to the customer along with their welcome pkg.

What if I want to cancel my plan?
You can always cancel your plan at any time with 30 days notice.  You can contact our customer service dept. at 1-800-755-9553

Can I get a refund if I have an annual plan, and cancel halfway through the year?
You can always cancel your plan at any time with 30 days notice.  You can contact our Customer Service dept. at 1-800-755-9553.  However, any payment you have made is not refundable, (after your initial 10 day return period has passed).  This is because the carbon offset investments have already been made on your behalf, and we can not reverse the emission reduction after they have occurred.

Do you sell your address lists or give my e-mail address to anyone else?
No we do not disclose our customer lists or e-mail addresses to anyone. They are only used to communicate with your directly to discuss any changes to your plan and inform you of the work we are doing on your behalf, though our e-newsletter.

Do you keep my credit card number on file?
Absolutely not. For your security, we use a secure third party credit card processing organization to handle all our credit card transactions.  The company is called MONERIS.  You can be assured that your card information will NOT be kept on our system or on our premises at anytime.  In fact, once I enter it into the computer and press ‘process’, I can not retrieve the information in any way.

What will I get?
You will be getting a welcome package in the mail within 2 weeks.  This will include a welcome letter, a certificate verifying your offset amount, and some promotional stickers you can use to announce your green credentials.

You will also get our news full of interesting information on the environment, and updates on our projects.

What is/are the specific offset project type(s) (e.g. wind farm, methane recovery, etc.) in your portfolio, and where are the carbon offset projects located?

LivClean invests in a variety of high quality carbon offset projects in Canada and around the globe.
Click on the links below for more details.

Eco-Stay Carbon Offset Portfolio

Have your carbon offsets been certified to a recognized standard (Gold Standard, CDM, VCS, Climate Action Reserve, Green-e Climate Protocol for Renewable Energy, etc.) to ensure quality? If so, please list the standard(s).

Yes.  Standards are noted above. In addition, LivClean only invests in projects that provide global climate benefits and meet these 9 criteria:

  1. Projects must be efficient. Our funds should not be diverted to unnecessary bureaucratic overheads.
  2. Projects must have additional, long-term benefits to the communities that undertake them. These range from increasing incomes and creating jobs, to improving health, to protecting local ecosystems.
  3. Add something extra. Your purchase must make a reduction over and above the current level. LivClean invests only in effective projects that rely on the purchase of carbon-offsets to fund their important work.
  4. No Double-Counting. LivClean guarantees that each and every carbon offset that you purchase is unique.
  5. Clear Ownership . Individualized serialization on public registries.
  6. Accurate Measurement. LivClean guarantees that the measurement of carbon dioxide emissions reduction is accurate so we all know how big of a difference we are making.
  7. Independent Verification. LivClean’s offsets are verified by a respected independent organization that ensures the offsets are valid and that they pass our criteria.
  8. Realized Reductions.  LivClean offsets come from emission reducing projects that offer realized reductions that are verified to have occurred before we sell them.
  9. International Industry Standards.   LivClean guarantees that all our carbon offset projects meet the standards of the VOLUNTARY CARBON STANDARD (VCS) – version 2, THE ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE TRUST, or the CLEAN DEVELOPMENT MECHANISM (CDM) or ISO 14064.

What steps have you taken to ensure that the carbon offsets you are selling are additional?

LivClean invests only in effective projects that rely on the purchase of carbon-offsets to fund their important work. All LivClean Carbon Offsets are additional and not the result of ‘business as usual’ activities. By adhering to strict international standards, our carbon offsets have went thru various screens such as the VCS additionality screen and/or have passed the CDM additionality screen.   In addition, our project procurement advisor reviews all project documentation to ensure additionality.

How do you ensure that the greenhouse gas reductions that your carbon offsets represent were quantified accurately?
All LivClean Carbon Offsets have been accurately quantified and are clearly demonstrated within verification and validation reports.

These reports meet the requirements of applicable carbon offset programs such as VCS or CSA Standard, and reports are publically available.

Are 100 per cent of your offsets validated and verified by accredited third party auditors?
100% of LivClean Carbon Offsets have been validated and verified by 3rd party auditors and organizations.

If you are selling offsets that will be created in the future (i.e., through forward crediting), what mechanisms (insurance or otherwise) have you put in place to ensure those offsets will actually be delivered?

LivClean Carbon Offset projects do not use ex-ante accounting (reductions that will happen sometime in the future, sometimes up to 100 years from now). All our offsets come from emission reducing projects that offer realized reductions that are verified to have occurred. These are also the requirements of VCS and CSA Standard.

What percentage of your portfolio (by tonnes of CO2e) is made up of offsets from tree planting or agricultural soils projects? If it is a significant percentage (more than 20% of your portfolio), how do you attempt to address permanence risks?

Our portfolio has only one agricultural soil project (representing less than 20% of the portfolio). The project has an allocated reserve to account for permanence.

Do you use a publicly accessible registry to track and retire your offsets? If yes, please list the website. If not, how do you ensure that your offsets are only sold to one buyer?
LivClean uses publicly accessible registries such as the VCS (Via APX and TZ1) as well as the CSA Standard GHG CleanProjects Registry

As well LivClean has its own proprietary internal registry that establishes clear unique ownership rights for each carbon offset retired.  The carbon offsets are registered within our system and then serialized using numbered certificates and assigned to LivClean customers.

What is your organization doing to educate consumers about climate change and the need for government policy to deal with it?
Educating and empowering individuals, businesses and industry about climate change is a very important aspect to LivClean.  We provide useful tips and information via our website and created Canada’s first weekly green radio segment- The Green Minute.   Moreover, LivClean always takes the time to develop strategic plans with our business and industry partners to help them reduce their carbon footprint, assist in climate change education and communicate the need for change at all stakeholder levels.

Are you a member of any organization such as the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA), which has a Code of Best Practice that members must adhere to?

As there are many member organizations out there, we are still weighing out our options as we do adhere to our own strict Code of Best Practices, of which is more stringent than some of the member organizations out there.

With that said, LivClean is applying for Green-e Climate certification.  Green-e Climate is the first certification program   for carbon offsets sold to consumers on the retail market. Green‑e Climate is a voluntary certification program that sets consumer protection and environmental integrity standards for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions sold in the voluntary market. It provides a four-step verification and certification service to participating GHG marketers to ensure that:

    1. Supply equals sales
    2. GHG reduction types retired are the same as advertised
    3. GHG reductions are independently certified
    4. Consumer disclosures are accurate and follow program guidelines.

Green‑e Climate documents are publicly available and can be found at www.green‑e.org. It is expected that this accreditation will be awarded later in 2009.  For more information about Green-e climate, visit http://www.green-e.org/getcert_ghg.shtml.
